Counterproductive, an indie punk trio based in the Seattle area, is powered by the creative synergy of brothers Sean and Jacob Curran, with Chase Rivera completing the lineup. Formed in their teenage years, the band began as a project fueled by passion and has grown into a key voice in the Pacific Northwest music scene.
Counterproductive’s journey began their journey as fans, attending shows at their local venues and looking to other local bands like they were gods. These formative years fostered their love for the Everett music scene. 2018 brought the release of their first standalone single, Nothing Lame, blending punk grit with heartfelt emotion. By 2019, the band expanded to iconic stages such as The Funhouse and Real Art, earning fans with their electric sets. They performed at Trail Mix, a festival in the Snoqualmie National Forest, showcasing their growing versatility and aptitude for “the big stage”.
This momentum carried into their debut EP, Urban Epileptic, which spotlighted their dynamic songwriting and solidified their place in the indie punk scene. Their next big step came with the 2020 release of Maniac, a pivotal EP that encapsulated their evolving sound and garnered attention with its powerful storytelling and raw energy. The band soon embarked on their “Traveling Circus” tour- self managed from Seattle to D.C, with a heavy emphasis on college towns in California. Their dynamic and exciting energy found a warm sense of belonging in the hearts of young people as they made friends all over the country.
October 2024 marked the release of Over It, produced by Tyler Mays (Instant Crush, Winehouse). This single explores themes of love, loss, and connection, blending polished production with the band’s raw emotional core. Inspired by Modern Baseball, Basement, Green Day, and American Football, their sound bridges nostalgic punk roots with a fresh, modern edge.
Counterproductive thrives on unforgettable live experiences. Their performances blend heartfelt melodies with raging anthems, and their shows often feature thrilling surprises like smashed guitars and spontaneous crowd interactions. Whether in intimate venues or on national stages, their chemistry and energy make every show memorable.
From their start as a garage band to their evolution into a nationally touring act, Counterproductive’s story is one of resilience, passion, and a commitment to creating music that resonates. With new releases and a decade of growth behind them, they’re poised to leave their mark on the indie punk scene.

BANSHEE ZINE BAND OF THE MONTH:
โ
"When I look at COUNTERPRODUCTIVE, I see a band that is firing on all cylinders, plowing through live shows like no one’s watching and having the showmanship to boot (sometimes I wonder if bassist Sean Curran feels more comfortable on stage or surfing their hoards of fans). All this while maintaining a consistent studio output… that’s this fucking good, I mean talk about defying genre standards. From their 2020 Urban Epilectic (that BTW is doing crazy numbers), that mixes funky bass lines and almost just as rhythmic vocals with the scene-standard dose of punky energy, to 2021’s Theology of the Body, which twists into an almost aurora avenue-esque jazz fusion romp, this band knows no bounds. But sonic output alone isn’t why COUNTER have topped my list, with this band there is a third mystical factor. One that isn’t unique but it’s sureshell prominent: INGENUITY. For a band that could easily rest on their live chops, they don’t.
COUNTERPRODUCTIVE is actively pushing the envelope with new ideas of how to connect to fans, and promote/put on shows (their own and others). Their fanclub, specifically, is one of a kind in the scene. Through this outlet, fans get exclusive access to band art, finger-on-the-pulse show details, and close communication with the band. It's not only one of the most original ideas I’ve ever seen, it’s also just a damn good idea. Within and without the music, COUNTERPRODUCTIVE is pioneering a new way for bands to exist in and interact with the DIY-scene and I am here for it. (insert joke about the band being productive… you know becau-)."
